Description of Plastic Bending of Beams

The Plastic Bending of Beams experiment hardware provides two end supports; one for completely rigid end fixings, whilst the other giving horizontal travel. Both supports create simple supports (knife edges) and have clamp plates which created fixed ends by restricting the end rotation of the test beam.

The Plastic Bending of Beams have a single point load applied using the fine screw jack mechanism with integral load cell supplied. The displacement of the test beam within its elastic and plastic regions is measured using a dial gauge and this along with the load cell output connect into the Interface

Experimental Capabilities of Plastic Bending of Beams:

 

  1. Measurement of collapse load for a black mild steel beam
  2. Study of extra load carried as beam is made redundant by end fixing

 

Specification of Plastic Bending of Beams

 

  1. Demonstration of the theory of plastic bending of a beam section, and increase in bending moment due to redundancy
  2. The apparatus provides two end supports which allow for rigid clamping or simple support of the mild steel beams
  3. One support allows for horizontal travel
  4. Three (3) test beams 20 x 5 mm supplied
  5. A screw jack with integral load cell, capable of applying loads 2kN is provided
  6. Deflection measurement available
  7. Applied force and deflection viewed via Interface
  8. Must be used with HST1 universal Frame and Stand
  9. Must be used with HDA200 Interface
  10. Comprehensive instruction manual provided
