Such treatment involves reverse osmosis, a process through which it is possible to effect separation, fractionation and concentration of organic or inorganic substances from the respective solutions without heating them or changing the phase of the solvent. In this osmosis system, the water laps the surface of the polyamide membrane when it is in the turbulent condition and the action exerted by the pressure allows the permeation of pure water through the membrane. The impurities contained in the water supply are thus concentrated and discharged. The passage dynamics of organic substances is very different from that of salts. The former undergo a filtration process on a molecular level so that none of the organic substances with a high molecular weight can pass through the membrane surface.
